Walking through the Tenryuji garden and out the north gate is the famous Arashiyama Bamboo forest path (Bamboo Walkway). It is a shorter distance than you might imagine, but it is beautiful, lined with tall bamboo.

Arashiyama Bamboo forest is always crowded with tourists, making it difficult to get good photo opportunities. If you want to take pictures when there are no people around, we recommend that you visit early in the morning.

Tenryuji Temple in Arashiyama is one of the World Heritage Sites in Kyoto. The garden is a creation of famous Muso Soseki.
Okochi Sanso Garden spreads the southern slope of Mount Ogura, just near the westend of the Bamboo Path.
Nomiya Jinja Shrine is located near the bamboo grove path. The torii gate made of black wood (barked sawtooth oak) is unique.
Mikami Jinja Shrine and Ogura Pond Mikami Jinja is the only shrine in Japan that enshrines the founder of the barber. Ogura Pond is famous for its lotus flowers.
Jojakkoji Temple is located in Sagano. Although it’s not very far from the Bamboo Forest, Jojakkoji Temple is quiet as if it were another world.
Alternative to Arashiyama Bamboo Forest
Many travelers will be surprised at the number of tourists in the bamboo grove. It used to be possible to take pictures early in the morning without other people entering, but that is becoming more difficult these days.
If you want to take pictures in a bamboo grove, there are other places with beautiful bamboo groves. However, they are not as large as Arashiyama.
One is the Nenbutsuji temple in Adashino. This temple is located along the Saga Triimoto Preserved Street. It is about 30 minutes walk from Arashiyama. This walk passes through some beautiful temples and highly recommended.
