Evening of moon viewing at Daikakuji Temple

The Kangetsu-no-yube (Evening of Moon Viewing) at Daikakuji Temple in Kyoto is a prestigious annual event that offers visitors a chance to experience the elegance of ancient Japanese moon-viewing traditions. Held for three days around the time of the harvest moon in September, this event takes place at Osawa Pond, one of Japan’s three most famous moon-viewing spots.

The tradition dates back to Emperor Saga (786-842), who enjoyed viewing the moon from boats on Osawa Pond with nobles and cultural figures. Today, visitors can partake in this refined custom by boarding dragon-headed boats (ryuto-gekishu) to admire both the moon in the sky and its reflection on the water’s surface.

The event typically runs from 5:30 PM to 9:00 PM, with last admissions at 8:30 PM. Visitors can enjoy various activities, including tea ceremonies at the Godai-do Hall observation deck, which offers a panoramic view of the pond and the moon. The atmosphere is enhanced by traditional court music and dance performances, creating a truly immersive experience of Heian period elegance.

General admission is available for 500 yen. Additionally, special tickets (priced at 5,000 yen in 2024) can be purchased in advance for a more exclusive experience. It includes the Moon Viewing boat ride and tea ceremony. These special tickets are limited and highly sought after, often requiring early reservations.
