Kozanji Temple (officially Kosanji Temple), located in the Togano area of Kyoto, is a Shingon Buddhist temple. It was originally founded in 774 during the late Heian period. It was originally a sub-temple of Jingoji Temple. In 1206, Emperor Go-Toba granted the temple grounds to the monk Myoe, who revived it under the name Kosanji. The temple is known for its rich cultural heritage and natural beauty. Also, it has been designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Kosanji is known as the birthplace of tea cultivation in Japan. The tea plants grown by Myoe are said to have been the origin of Uji tea.
Kosanji Temple offers visitors a unique blend of natural beauty, historical significance, and spiritual atmosphere, making it a must-visit destination for those interested in Japanese culture and history.
Choju Jinbutsu Giga, an origin of Japanese manga
Choju Jinbutsu Giga (Animal-person Caricatures): A set of four picture scrolls dating from the 12th-13th centuries, considered one of Japan’s most important cultural treasures. This is often referred to as Japan’s oldest manga. These scrolls depict anthropomorphized animals engaging in humorous activities. It consists of four scrolls. They are all national treasures. See here for Choju Jinbutsu Giga.
Original scrolls are not in the temple. The first and second scrolls are kept in the Tokyo National Museum. And remaining two scrolls are kept in Kyoto National Museum. So you can only see a copy in the temple.
Architecture
Sekisui-in is the only remaining structure from Myoe’s time. This building has been relocated and repurposed over the centuries. Sekisui-in is a very simple but beautiful building. You are not allowed to take pictures inside.
Kaisando Hall was built on the site where Myoe spent his final years.
