Hojuji Temple is one of the temples located near Sanjusangendo. This temple was founded in 989 by Fujiwara no Tamemitsu. Later, Emperor Goshirakawa abdicated in 1158 and moved to Hojuji Temple in 1161, designating it as his residence.
Despite its historical importance, this temple does not currently possess much in the way of cultural assets to view.
At this temple you can experience sutra copying (shakyo). The temple also used to offer shojin-ryori (vegetarian food in Zen temple), but this is now on hiatus.

Yogen-in Temple has a blood ceiling and cedar door and sliding door paintings by Sotatsu Tawaraya that are a must-see.
