Houkongoin Temple (法金剛院)

Only local people know the flower temple Houkongoin. It is a temple of the Ritsu sect of Buddhism. The Ritsu sect is represented by Toshodaiji temple in Nara, but there are only a few temples. (Temple’s official WEB site)

Hokkongoin is located right in front of JR Hanazono Station, making it a very accessible temple.

Lotus flowers

This temple is famous for the lotus flowers that cover the pond.

In addition to lotus flowers, visitors can enjoy seasonal flowers such as hydrangea and cherry blossoms.

Houkongoin Temple is open to the public according to the time of year of each flower. It is usually open to the public only in the morning, especially during the lotus season (around July) the gates open at 7:30 am.

Buddhist images in the temple

At Houkongoin Temple, you can also see several wonderful Buddhist statues. Unfortunately, you cannot take photos of the Buddha images.

The main image of Houkongoin Temple is a statue of Amida Nyorai made in the Fujiwara period and is a national treasure. This Amida Nyorai statue This statue of Amida Nyorai is in the style of the one in Byodoin Temple.

The eleven-faced Kannon Bosatsu statue from the Kamakura period (1185-1333) is an important cultural asset and is a rare example with four arms.

Monju Bosatsu (Manjusri) Statue in monk’s form is from the Heian period (794-1192) and is an Important Cultural Property.

A large statue of Jizo Bosatsu, carved from a single piece of wood, is also from the Heian period (794-1192) and is an Important Cultural Property.

Myoshinji Temple and its sub-temples are within 10 minutes walk. Many of Myoshinji’s sub-temples, like Houkongoin Temple, accept visitors only during limited periods of the year. Please consult your guide.
