Nanmei-in Temple is one of the sub-temples of Tofukuji Temple and is located at the southernmost point of the Tofukuji site.
In the temple’s precinct, there is the grave of Princess Asahi or Asahi Hime. She was a sister of Toyotomi Hideyoshi and regular wife of Tokugawa Ieyasu. Of course, it must have been a political marriage. Asahi Hime was married at the time, but in 1586, Toyotomi Hideyoshi married his younger sister Asahime to Tokugawa Ieyasu in order to appease Tokugawa Ieyasu, who was his enemy.
Princess Asahi once went to Okazaki Castle, but returned to Kyoto to look after her mother. And she died of illness in Kyoto in 1950.
Nanmei-in is only open to the public during special events. Usually tourists cannot see inside the temple.
