Rokusono Jinja Shrine is the birthplace of the Seiwa Genji clan. The deity of the shrine is Minamoto no Tsunemoto, the founder of the Seiwa Minamoto clan. Minamoto no Norimoto was the son of Prince Sadazumi, the sixth prince of Emperor Seiwa, and the grandson of the emperor. For this reason, Norimoto was commonly known as the “Sixth Grandson of the Emperor (Rokusonnou)”. He was a master of waka poetry. A famous collection of waka poems in the “Shui Waka Shu” includes it. There is a monument to Minamoto no Tsunemoto in the precincts of the temple.
According to shrine legend, Hachijotei, the residence of Minamoto no Tsunemoto, used to be here. And the burial place of Minamoto no Tsunemoto might be here as well.
The Tokugawa family, who claimed descent from the Minamoto clan, rebuilt the present shrine in 1707.
