Manjuji Temple, located near Tofukuji Station, is a temple of the Rinzai sect of Zen Buddhism. It is one of the sub-temple of nearby Tofukuji Temple. It was once one of the five temples (Gozan) of Kyoto, along with Tenryuji Temple, Shokokuji Temple, Kenninji Temple, and Tofukuji Temple. But it declined after a fire in 1434 and is now a shadow of its former self.
The bell tower of this temple is from the Muromachi period and is an important cultural asset. It and other cultural assets belonged to a large temple called Sanseiji that once existed. Sanseiji Temple was a large temple in the Kamakura period (1185-1333), but declined and was absorbed into Manjuji Temple in 1873.
Manjusri Temple is not open to the public.
